The Years by Annie Ernaux, Translated by Alison L. Strayer (Paperback)

Annie Ernaux, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature, tells the story of France from 1941 to 2006 through a mix of personal memory and shared culture: family photographs, songs, films, adverts, slogans and news. In Alison L. Strayer's English translation, the result is a portrait of one life and a whole generation at once.

Rather than a standard memoir, Ernaux blends autobiography, history and sociology into a new kind of book. It suits readers of literary nonfiction, French writing and social history.

• Collective voice: written as 'we' and 'she' rather than 'I'
• Six decades: post-war France through to the new millennium
• Recognition: shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2019
