Electra and Other Plays by Euripides, translated by John Davie (Paperback)

Five tragedies by Euripides, translated by John Davie and edited with an introduction and notes by Richard Rutherford, make up this Penguin Classics paperback. The plays were written while Athens was at war with Sparta, and all of them look hard at what conflict does to families, and above all to women.

• Electra: Agamemnon's son and daughter take bloody revenge on their mother
• Suppliant Women: grieving mothers plead for the right to bury sons killed in battle
• Andromache: the widow of Hector lives as a captive after the fall of Troy
• Hecabe: the fallen queen of Troy avenges the murder of her son
• Trojan Women: the women of a conquered city wait to learn which Greek victor will take them

A strong single volume for anyone studying Greek tragedy or reading Euripides for the first time.
