Ariadne by Jennifer Saint (Paperback)

Jennifer Saint's debut novel retells a famous Greek myth from the side of the woman usually left at its edges. Ariadne, princess of Crete and daughter of King Minos, grows up hearing the bellows of the Minotaur, her monstrous half-brother kept in the Labyrinth beneath the palace and fed with young lives sent from Athens.

When the Athenian prince Theseus arrives to kill the beast, Ariadne chooses to help him and risks everything she has, but heroes and gods rarely keep their promises. It is a strong pick for readers who enjoy myth retellings told by women.

• New angle: the Theseus legend seen through Ariadne's eyes
• Sisters: the bond between Ariadne and Phaedra runs through the story
• Myth and consequence: what the deeds of heroes cost the women around them
• Debut: the first novel from the author of Elektra and Atalanta
