After Dark by Haruki Murakami (Paperback)

After Dark is a short novel by Haruki Murakami, translated from the Japanese by Jay Rubin, that unfolds across a single night in Tokyo. Close to midnight, Mari is reading in a nearly empty diner when she is asked to help a young woman who has been beaten at a love hotel called the Alphaville.

Elsewhere in the city, Mari's sister Eri has been asleep for two months, a sleep that seems far too deep to be natural, and in her room a television that is not plugged in flickers into life. Moving between the two, Murakami builds a quiet, dreamlike unease that works well as a first taste of his fiction.

• Set over one night, from midnight until dawn
• Translated from Japanese by Jay Rubin
• A compact Murakami novel of about 200 pages
• Blends everyday city life with the uncanny
