Art of the Bible by Scot McKendrick

The Art of the Bible by Scot McKendrick and Kathleen Doyle is a richly illustrated survey of 45 illuminated Bibles, chosen to trace 1,000 years of history across the Christian world. The authors, both leading manuscript experts, show how these books provide some of the richest evidence of early Christian painting and its interpretations of scripture.

The journey runs chronologically from Constantinople, Lindisfarne and Carolingian Tours to Winchester, Mozarabic Spain, Crusader Jerusalem, northern Iraq, Paris, Naples, Persia and beyond, ending in Gondar in imperial Ethiopia. Every manuscript is remarkable on its own, and together they make a sumptuous book for lovers of art history, medieval culture and religious heritage.
